The Kings Need to Extend Buddy Hield and Bogdan Bogdanovic
The Kings have quite the dilemma on their hands as both Buddy Hield and Bogdan Bogdanovic become restricted free agents at the end of this season. Sacramento has been proactive and offered Buddy Hield a 4-year $90 million contract extension and Bogdan Bogdanovic a 4-year $51.4 million extension, but both are hesitant to sign as they believe they are worth more than what they are being offered.
It’s hard to disagree with Hield and Bogdanovic for holding off until they get a better offer, but with Fox and Bagley eligible for contract extensions in 2020 and 2021, the Kings are trying to get these players at their cheapest so they can keep their young core intact.
Right now, it might be easier to say that Hield is the better player, but one could argue that Bogdanovic is just as valuable. Remember, it wasn’t too long ago that Bogie was starting over Buddy Buckets.
It is undeniable that Sacramento would get worse if they lost either of these players. With Buddy’s breakout year last season, the Kings would miss him in their starting backcourt next to Fox, as he proved he was a top shooter in the league. But Bogie contains untapped potential. If he continues his dominance from the FIBA World Cup, his support off the bench will be a key reason the Kings stay in the playoff hunt this season. Bogdanovic’s boost off the bench is just as valuable as Hield’s prominence in the starting rotation.
Even though these guards are playing hardball, the Kings need to do what they can to keep them both. It’ll be the front office’s challenge to keep these players together as they are aware of their potential and worth. Fitting Hield, Bogdanovic, Fox, and Bagley into their salary cap is no small task, but one that needs to be achieved. Kings fans are hoping Vlade can pull this off and can keep this unit together to turn this franchise around.
